●Works4-Calligraphy 2
I don’t know why but it is said that failures don’t know that they are failures but I’m often called that I am a failure. Everybody knows my poor handwriting. “Even writing by my weaker hand, I cannot write so poor.” Or “Even an American should be able to write better”. Their comments are varied but everybody is sure of my poor handwriting. I’m embarrassed but I wasn’t care about my handwriting at all as far as it can be understood. I think that the failures could be optimistic. I have never been in serious trouble for my poor handwriting because nowadays most people use computers, and most entrance exams use computer-graded test, and 80 percent of the population have their new year’s card printed and therefore I didn’t think for a long time that I should improve my handwriting. Anyway I began to learn the calligraphy as the start of remodeling myself.
Learning calligraphy at my age, people might think myself is a kind of the person of culture but I’m just trying to be as good as primary school students in the class. My young competitors are quite good and I sometimes take a peed at their work to compare mine and work harder. My instructor is a great person. He never laughed at my poor handwriting and gave me a good piece of advice. My instructor says that your script shows yourself. He is right, my script is not straight.
Who you meets would change your idea and art greatly and so as work. Even if you work on something for the same theme, you could be changed by somebody who you met and it will give some effect onto your work. In 10 years ago nobody would imagine that I will put my work of calligraphy at the exhibition. I displayed my calligraphy installation at “Ushiku Modern Art Exhibition”. I realized it now that I was brave to do that because there were many calligraphy masters also displayed their great works there. It was like that you play piano in front of the great artist Mozart. Please forgive me, it was the fault from my youth. However I was fortunate that I had some valuable piece of advises from some great calligraphy masters those are “the core is missing”, “not quite right of the direction of brush” or “should be more careful of handling brush”. I don’t usually get such great opportunities. I believe, you should play a piano even if you are not a great pianist, if you see Mozart.
This work is the development from my previous work. I came across a work which is different from mine and I wanted to find something new with combining the different technique. It is the collaboration. Master Saida who also displayed the work at the exhibition kindly accepted my request and looked my work and gave some correction. I am so much grateful for Master Saida to give me a great support in his busy days. However how miserable I was and it was a hard work for me to write six letters. I surely still have a long way ahead of me. It is extremely narrow path.
