●Work 8 -Transformation (Practicing Kanji)
I continue working on “Practicing Kanji”. We keep changing physically and psychologically. In those changes, I wanted to create the form which would express some un-visible changes.
I like visiting secondhand bookstores. In those shops, there are various sections such as “the 100 yen corner”, “the back-numbers corner” and so on but most interests me is the section “take for free”. I especially like to look at the books in that section. One day I found an interesting book there. It was an exercise book called “Kanji for junior high-school students”. That well-used book was filled with notes. It was even scored, 80 point for the first, 95 points for the second. The person used to own this book must be a hard worker and fond a name on the back, it says Kobayashi and I took that book to home. I tried the test on the first page and got 25 points. Kobayashi took 80 points and I ……., I felt disappointed and tried the next page, I got 30 points. I was really frustrated. I couldn’t believe that I was beaten by a junior high-school student! I couldn’t sleep well that night.
I am not good at Kanji, however, I have to face the fact as far as I live as a Japanese. I wish I was good at Kanji at the average level. I thought I should begin learning Kanji for primary school level and I went to a book shop and bought Kanji workbooks for the 1st year to the 6th year of the primary school. I am now working on a workbook for the 2nd year of Junior high school every day. If I keep this pace, I should be able to take an university examination in a couple of years. I am encouraged thinking about it. And I need to beat Kobayashi who I never met.
You would not gain or lose weigh by studying but you will surely have some changes mentally. It should be one of the sign of changes inside me that to pick up Kanji or phrases which I don’t fully understand and which I didn’t usually do before.
I am still working on this piece and entire image cannot be seen but I keep leaning Kanji and by doing it, this work will be completed.
